Caring for

The Soil

We believe that improving soil health through the application of compost, mulch and cover crops helps to produce better quality fruit and a more resilient vine.

Since 2015 we have been actively improving the soil quality on our farms through soil health practices. Through the introduction of compost and cover crops, organic matter is added to the soil which as they decompose increases soil organic matter and improves soil structure. Whilst we produce our own compost on the farm we also use commercially obtained compost to add to our soil.

As a result, we have seen a significant reduction in our application of synthetic fertilizers and chemical inputs required to improve soil quality. Healthier soils mean better water retention and thus less irrigation required, and less water wasted.
